What are UHMW-PE Marine Fenders?
UHMW-PE Marine Fenders UAE | Impact-Resistant Fender Pads Dubai Supplier – Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW-PE) marine fenders deliver 500 kNm/m impact absorption, 0.09-0.18 friction coefficient, and 25+ year lifespan for UAE ports, Jebel Ali container terminals, and Abu Dhabi offshore platforms.
PIANC IW-4-2002 compliant, corrosion-proof, and marine growth resistant, these fenders protect quay walls proven in Khalifa Port berths and Ruwais LNG dolphins.
Key Features
The following are the key features of the durable and robust UHMW-PE that set it apart from other materials used for marine fenders.
- Superior impact resilience: Absorbs berthing energies up to 500 kNm/m without deformation.
- Ultra-low-friction surface: Enables controlled vessel maneuvering and reduces hull abrasion.
- Corrosion-proof composition: Immune to saltwater, hydrocarbons, and microbes
- Lightweight efficiency: Reduces installation costs by 35% versus other alternatives.
- Elongated lifespan: 25+ years of service.
What are the Applications of UHMW-PE Marine Fenders?
UHMW-PE Marine fenders are commonly mounted on steel or timber fender panels. They are durable, low-friction pads offering superior abrasion resistance and impact absorption. They are resistant to marine borers, chemicals and UV, making them ideal for protecting structures and hulls.
These components also serve as sliding surfaces at lock entrances, quays, and berths, facilitating smooth, controlled vessel movement with minimal friction. Additionally, colored versions enable effective berth demarcation, helping operators visually define specific zones for safe loading, unloading, and maneuvering.
These tough, wear-resistant fenders are used at
- Bulk cargo terminals and container ports.
- Offshore platforms, FPSOs, and LNG facilities.
- Naval docks, ferry terminals, and lock systems.
- Industrial wharves and pile cladding.
How to use UHMW-PE Marine Fenders ?
UHMW-PE marine fenders offer unmatched reliability through simple installation and minimal upkeep. The following steps should be followed during the installation of these fenders.
- Site Preparation: Clean surfaces to Sa 2.5 blast standard, apply zinc-rich primer, and confirm crane capacity exceeds the fender weight by 2x.
- Pre-Assembly: Lay the fender panel face down on timber blocks to protect the UHMW-PE surface: test-fit stainless steel bolts (A4-80 grade, M20+) and washers in sockets. Loosely assemble the frontal frame.
- Alignment: Employ two-legged slings attached to eye bolts on the fender foot. Now, heave with a crane, aligning holes to anchors.
- Securing: Insert bolts with washers. Apply thread locker and polysulfide sealant over heads.
- Commissioning: Perform load test at 1.5x design energy. Inspect for even contact and gaps.
Safety Protocols
Although UHMW-PE marine fenders remain safe in their solid form, critical precautions must be taken during cutting or drilling operations.
- Keep all ignition sources away from the work area, as machining UHMW_PE creates highly flammable dust.
- Wear an NIOS-approved dust respirator when cutting to avoid inhaling the dust.
- Wear suitable PPE, eye and skin protection gear and wash hands thoroughly after working with the material.
- Do not expose UHMW-PE to open flames or temperatures exceeding 130–140°C or 266–284°F.
- Overheated material releases harmful gases like carbon monoxide and various other hydrocarbons.
- Store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and potent oxidising agents.
- Keep a fire extinguisher handy in the welding and hot-work area.
- The material should not be stored for more than 30 months after production.
