What is a PTFE Teflon GasKet?

A PTFE gasket is a sealing part made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). A synthetic fluoropolymer known for its outstanding chemical resistance, low coefficient of friction, and non-stick, hydrophobic properties. Often identified by the brand name Teflon®, PTFE is widely used in industries requiring reliable sealing under harsh chemical and thermal conditions.

PTFE gaskets maintain their integrity even when exposed to harsh chemicals, very high or low temperatures, and high pressure. To improve structural strength and minimize deformation (creep), PTFE material can be blended with fillers like carbon or graphite, resulting in enhanced durability and dimensional stability.

What are the features of Teflon Gasket?

Teflon gaskets deliver unmatched reliability across demanding industries, from chemical plants to high-tech assemblies, thanks to their exceptional material advantages.

Excellent Chemical Resistance
PTFE gaskets perform reliably in contact with a wide range of aggressive chemicals, acids, and solvents. Their inert nature ensures they do not react or degrade, making them ideal for corrosive and high-purity environments.

High Dielectric Strength
The material exhibits superior electrical insulation properties, making PTFE gaskets suitable for use in applications where electrical isolation and stability are critical.

Wide Temperature Resistance
With an operating range from -200°C to +260°C, PTFE gaskets maintain their sealing integrity in both cryogenic conditions and high-temperature industrial processes.

Low Coefficient of Friction
PTFE offers one of the lowest friction coefficients among engineering materials, reducing wear, heat buildup, and energy loss in mechanical systems.

Superior Moisture Resistance
Its non-porous and hydrophobic surface prevents water absorption, ensuring consistent performance even in humid or wet conditions.

Applications

PTFE (Teflon) gaskets are used in a wide range of industries that require durable and chemically resistant sealing solutions. They are widely used in chemical plants to stop leaks in flanges, pipes, and valve joints that handle corrosive chemicals. In the food and beverage industry, these gaskets are chosen because they are non-stick, safe, and easy to keep clean, meeting strict hygiene and safety rules.

The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries use PTFE gaskets to keep equipment tightly sealed and clean. These gaskets do not support bacterial growth and can handle frequent, harsh cleaning. PTFE gaskets are also used in petrochemical plants, refineries, and machinery where high pressure, very hot or cold temperatures, and constant movement require strong and dependable sealing performance. Thanks to their low friction and wide temperature tolerance, they are equally effective in cryogenic applications and systems with linear or rotary motion.

How to Use?

Follow these simple steps to get the best performance from a PTFE gasket.

  1. Check and clean all flange faces, bolts, nuts, and the PTFE gasket for any damage, such as cracks, rough edges, or dirt. Remove old gasket material and clean all surfaces and flat with no more than 0.5 mm unevenness.
  2. Make sure the flanges are straight and parallel, with bolt holes lined up correctly. Use spacers if needed to keep an even gap and try to avoid bending or distortion.
  3. Verify gasket size and type match specifications, then center it precisely between flanges without twisting, pinching, or tearing.
  4. Place the bolts into the aligned holes and tighten the nuts by hand, keeping the pressure even with a crisscross or star pattern. Apply lubricant to the threads only if specified, and never use any lubricant on the gasket area.
  5. Tighten the bolts slowly, one at a time, in several rounds (about four), using a star pattern and a calibrated wrench. Follow the given torque values to avoid over-tightening or damaging the gasket.
  6. Again, tighten the bolts after the system is pressurized or goes through a temperature change. Do not use adhesives or anti-seize on the gasket.

Safety Guidelines

Always follow these safety tips when handling and working with PTFE gaskets.

  • Wear safety gloves and safety glasses when handling gaskets.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and do not heat above 260°C to avoid harmful fumes.
  • Check flanges for sharp edges to prevent cuts or damage to the gasket.
  • Use a calibrated wrench and avoid over-tightening the bolts.
  • Do not use lubricants or adhesives on the gasket unless clearly specified.
Test for leaks after installation and re-tighten if required.
  • Keep the area free from open flames and do not smoke around.
